Obituary

Katherine Johnson Stevens, age 88 of Jefferson Township, Perryopolis, Pa passed away on Monday, August 28, 2023 in Country Care Manor, Fayette City, Pa. She was born on October 29, 1934 at Murphy, NC, a daughter of William Walter and Estelle Maggie Pace Johnson.

Katherine was a woman of many talents.  She was musically gifted, playing dulcimers made by her husband George (“Steve”) and brother Winston.  Her artistic talents will live on in the many quilts, crocheted items and paintings adorning the homes of many who were blessed to know and love her. Her beautiful flower gardens bloomed from Spring to Fall, and she could be seen well into her later years riding her own lawnmower as she worked with her husband to tend to their landscaping. Her love of God was shown as she memorized the Sermon on the Mount scripture passage, and recited it many times at different churches.  An excellent seamstress, she designed and created costumes for the Live Nativity programs that have been held at Perryopolis Baptist Church.  She loved to watch her grandnieces playing volleyball and softball at Frazier High School, where she was affectionately known as “Tootaloo”. She was an excellent cook, having learned to cook authentic local foods from the various places she lived as her family relocated to different parts of the United States. Her artistic eye was evident on Sunday mornings in the striking outfits she loved to wear to Church. She was a special lady, and was loved and will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son George Thomas Stevens, Jr.; brothers: Harold, Kenneth, Rabon, Winston, Roger Johnson.

Katherine is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, George Thomas Stevens, Sr.; daughter, Kathy Yvonne Jedrzejewicz and her husband Thomas of Austin, TX; grandchildren: Haley Stevens and her husband Chris, U.S. Marine SSgt. (pending imminent promotion to GySgt.) Trenton Stevens and his wife, Lauren of Oceanside, California and their children Ellie, Everett and Emilia; brothers: Lowell Johnson and his wife Sharon, Dean Johnson and his wife Karen, all of Missouri; sister, Annette Walker and her husband Dennis of Perryopolis; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews; and step-grand-, step-great-, and step-great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to all the staff members at Country Care Manor and Amedisys Hospice who gently and lovingly provided care for Katherine.  Their genuine affection for her was obvious, and means so much to all of us.  God Bless them all.
