Eleanor J. Stunja

December 27, 1934 ~ January 1, 2018 (age 83) 83 Years Old


Eleanor J. (Mason) Stunja of Whitsett, PA, departed this life on Monday, January 1, 2018, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.   She is now set free and at peace.  Eleanor was born on December 27, 1934, at Lander, PA, in Warren County.  She was the oldest daughter of Harold and Ruby J. Bosko Mason and the first grandchild of Joseph and Helen Bosko.  Eleanor spent most of her childhood living with her maternal grandparents on their family farm in Warren County, PA.

She graduated in the class of 1952 from Sugar Grove High School School in Warren County.  As a student attending Penn State, she worked at several jobs.    She was employed at ALCOA as a bookkeeper, worked as a waitress at the Sunset Diner in Springdale, PA while residing with her maternal Aunt Vera and Uncle Leonard.  In 1954 Eleanor began dating her future husband, Edward R. Stunja, Sr. of Ralph, Pa in Fayette County.  They were united in marriage on Saturday, June 18, 1955 in Republic, PA and were married for 52 years until her husband’s passing.

After raising her family, she went back to work in her sixties, and was employed as a deli clerk and cook at the Foodland store in Munhall, PA and several years later was cook at the Mount Macrina facility in Uniontown, PA.  Eleanor enjoyed playing bingo and cards for a pastime, also was an avid reader.  She collected magnets and salt and pepper shakers.  Eleanor was a wonderful dancer and enjoyed many genres of music, especially country music, classical and Croatian music.  She enjoyed gift wrapping.  She traveled to numerous States with her son, Jeff and enjoyed visiting relatives, historical landmarks and museums.

Eleanor is survived by the following children: daughters, Cindi and husband, Robert Caspar of Munhall, PA; Yvonne and husband, Norman Risker of Jennings, FL; sons Edward R. Stunja, Jr and wife, Sharon of Perryopolis, PA, Jeffrey A. Stunja of Whitsett; Scott J. Stunja of Perryopolis, PA, Douglas R. Stunja, Sr. and friend, Bob of Jacksonville, FL.  She is survived by the following grandchildren: Niccole, Brandon, Mallory, Adam, Angie, Lee, Ashlee, Monica, Megan, Mason and Doug; great grandchildren: Chyanne,  Cameron, Reagan, Bryce, Denver, Dawson,  Scarlett, Tyler, Tenley, Elliana, Luke,  Grayson, Skyler and Isaiah; Step grandchildren: Jamie, Joey, Sean, Dustin, William,  Jeffrey, Scott, Memory and Mathew, three sisters: Helen Davison and husband Lee, Edna LeBarron and Mary Slames,  and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was an excellent cook and baker for her large family, but oftentimes would invite the neighborhood kids in to share her home cooked pastries.  She would also cook for large family gatherings and catered for special occasions. 

Eleanor was a dear friend to all who knew her and will be missed by many. 

In honoring Eleanor’s request the arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the Blair-Lowther Funeral Home, 305 Rear Independence Street, Perryopolis, Pa.
